Triceratops was a plant-eating ceratopsian dinosaur that first appeared in the Late Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous period, in what is now North America. It is one of the last known groups of non-avian dinosaurs, which went extinct during the Cretaceous– Paleogene extinction event 66 million years ago. The name Triceratops literally means “three-horned face”. Forty-seven complete or partial skulls were discovered in North America between 2000 and 2010. Triceratops, the archetypal ceratopsian, is one of the most popular dinosaurs and has appeared in films, postage stamps, and many other media.
