The Circus Maximus in Rome was the largest ancient stadium, able to hold more than 150,000 spectators. It was mainly used for chariot races, but other shows and public ceremonies also took place there. Its elongated shape favoured fast and spectacular sporting contests. Today, on the site of the former circus, there is a vast park where remnants of the old stands can still be seen.
