Big Ben is one of the most recognisable symbols of London and the United Kingdom. The tower is part of the Palace of Westminster. Since 2012, in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, the tower has officially been known as Elizabeth Tower.
Big Ben is a 13.5-ton bell located inside the tower. It strikes the hour, while four smaller bells chime the quarter hours. Fun fact: to regulate the clock, clockmakers use coins placed on the pendulum. Adding a coin accelerates the clock by 0.4 seconds per day.
